A PRACTICAL GLOSSARY FOR HANDS, RULE SHEETS AND ACCOUNT CONDITIONS

Blackjack terms describe several different things: the cards in a hand, the actions you can take, the dealer’s procedure and the money recorded by an account. Knowing which meaning applies makes a rule sheet or game screen much easier to read.

Use the alphabetical groups below for a quick definition, then follow the related guide for worked decisions and rule details. A short label such as S17 or DAS explains one condition; it does not describe the entire game.

A–C: aces, blackjack and balance terms

Ace. A card that counts as 1 or 11 when adding a blackjack hand. Use its value in the whole hand, not in isolation.

Action. A player’s available decision, such as hit or stand. In other contexts, “action” can mean money wagered, so read the surrounding explanation.

Bankroll. Money set aside for play. Naming an amount does not make it safe to lose or guarantee it will last a particular number of rounds.

Base bet. The initial main-hand stake, before additional amounts such as a double, split stake or separate optional wager.

Basic strategy. A set of hand decisions calculated for stated game rules. It is different from a sequence for increasing stakes. See basic strategy.

Blackjack. A qualifying initial two-card ace with a ten-value card in conventional play; also the game’s name. Read the actual definition and payout.

Bonus balance. Promotional funds subject to the offer’s conditions. A displayed bonus amount is not automatically cash available for withdrawal.

Bust. A hand total over 21, after counting aces as 1 where necessary. Under conventional main-game rules, a busted player hand loses.

Cash balance. The account’s cash-labelled amount. Read any pending transactions, restrictions and withdrawal requirements rather than relying on a label alone.

Chip value. The amount represented by a selected chip. It may differ from the total accepted across several positions or wagers.

Contribution. The proportion of eligible stakes credited toward promotional wagering. For example, 10% contribution credits C$5 from C$50 of qualifying stakes.

Read card values for hand arithmetic and bonus terms for account conditions. Combining the two can make a correct hand total look like an explanation of promotional progress when it is not.

D–H: dealer rules and player actions

DAS. “Double after split”: permission to double a resulting split hand, subject to the table’s restrictions. It does not itself state the eligible totals.

Dealer. The hand and dealing role against which your main wager is settled. The dealer follows the game’s required procedure.

Deck. A set of cards used by the game. Record deck information alongside the other rules; deck count alone does not describe the complete proposition.

Double down. Add the permitted extra stake and receive one more card, after which that hand stands. See doubling.

Early surrender. In the conventional distinction, surrender before the dealer checks for blackjack. Eligibility and timing must be stated in the rules.

Even money. An offered 1:1 settlement of a player’s blackjack against a dealer ace in the conventional context. Read the exact offer and conditions.

Face card. A jack, queen or king. Each counts as 10 in ordinary blackjack hand addition, rather than 11, 12 or 13.

Flat betting. Keeping a chosen base stake constant. Doubles, splits or optional wagers can still change the total committed in a round.

Hand. A group of cards played and settled together. After a split, identify each resulting hand separately.

Hard hand. A hand with no ace currently counted as 11. It can still contain an ace: ace–8–7 is hard 16.

H17. The dealer hits soft 17. It does not mean the dealer hits every hard 17 or that the player should copy that procedure.

Hit. Request another card for the current hand. Recalculate the total and any ace value after the card arrives.

Hole card. The dealer’s face-down card where that dealing procedure is used. Its presence does not, by itself, specify when a blackjack check occurs.

House edge. A theoretical expected loss relative to the stated stake basis, under specified rules and play assumptions. It is not a forecast of one session.

The dealer-rules guide explains the procedure behind H17 and S17. For mathematical comparisons, the Wizard of Odds house-edge explanation distinguishes an initial-bet basis from total money bet; compare figures using their stated definitions.

I–P: insurance, naturals and settlement language

Insurance. A separate optional wager on dealer blackjack, conventionally associated with an ace upcard. It is not blanket protection of the main stake.

Late surrender. In the conventional distinction, surrender after the dealer’s check has ruled out blackjack. Read the permitted hands and upcards.

Live dealer. A game using a streamed dealer and table process. Read its timers, decision procedure and round-history rules. See live-dealer blackjack.

Main wager. The primary blackjack bet settled against the dealer, distinct from an optional pair, suited-combination or other side wager.

Multi-hand. Playing more than one player hand or position. Each accepted stake adds to the round’s total commitment.

Natural. Another name for a qualifying initial two-card blackjack. An ordinary three-card 21 does not automatically receive the same treatment.

No peek. A rule arrangement in which the dealer does not check at the stage described. Read what happens to extra stakes if blackjack is found later.

Pair. Two cards meeting the relevant rule’s matching definition. Equal point value, identical rank and a suited pair are not interchangeable descriptions.

Paytable. The schedule of qualifying outcomes and their payouts. A side-bet paytable is separate from the ordinary main-hand settlement.

Profit. The amount won above the stake returned on that wager. For C$10 paid at 1:1, profit is C$10.

Push. A tied or otherwise defined push result, returning the stake without profit. Check exceptions in the actual variant.

OLG’s PlaySmart introduction explains conventional hand outcomes and insurance separately. Use our insurance and even-money guide and payouts guide when those terms appear in the same round.

R–S: returns, soft hands and table shorthand

Rebet. A control to repeat a previous stake arrangement where supplied. Inspect the accepted positions and optional wagers before using it.

Resplit. Split an eligible pair formed after a previous split. The maximum resulting hands and treatment of aces are separate restrictions.

RNG. Random number generator. The abbreviation alone does not state the game’s deck model, shuffle procedure, rules or verified testing status.

Round reference. An identifier for a particular game round, useful when matching cards, actions and settlement with support or account history.

RTP. Return to player: a theoretical return percentage on a stated basis and assumptions over repeated play. It is not a promised refund of your deposit.

S17. The dealer stands on soft 17. Check this alongside H17 when selecting a rule-matched decision reference.

Shoe. The device holding cards for dealing at a physical table. For an online game, read the actual deck and dealing description.

Side bet. A separate optional wager with its own qualifying outcome and paytable. It can lose while the main hand wins, or vice versa.

Soft hand. A hand in which an ace currently counts as 11. It can contain more than two cards: ace–2–4 is soft 17.

Split. Separate an eligible pair into hands with the required extra stake. Read permitted actions and payout treatment for the resulting hands.

Stand. Finish taking actions on the current hand. It does not declare a win or stop the dealer from completing the round.

Stake. Money committed to a wager. Distinguish the initial main stake from additional doubles, splits and optional bets.

Surrender. Exercise an offered option to end an eligible hand for the specified partial loss, commonly half the initial stake.

The Wizard of Odds blackjack reference defines hand and action terms under stated rules. The detailed split, surrender and side-bet guides explain the additional conditions behind the short definitions.

Saved regional payment and welcome information dated October 20, 2026. A glossary definition does not verify a particular game’s availability, rules or account eligibility.

T–W: table limits, turnover and account terms

Table limit. A stated minimum or maximum wager. Identify which position or wager it applies to; it is different from a cashier transaction limit.

Ten-value card. A 10, jack, queen or king. These share a point value without necessarily meeting every rule’s definition of matching ranks.

Total return. The amount paid back including the returned stake where applicable. C$10 winning at 1:1 returns C$20 in total.

Turnover. An amount of stakes accumulated through play. In a promotion, read which stakes qualify and how they are credited.

Unit. A chosen reference stake used to describe amounts. If one unit is C$4, three units are C$12; it is not a guaranteed-risk measure.

Upcard. The dealer’s visible card. It informs a hand decision but is not added to the player’s own total.

Verification. The operator’s official identity, ownership or account checks. Read the requested documents and submission route. See account verification.

Wagering requirement. The required credited play under an offer. You need the multiplier, calculation base, contribution, deadline and other conditions to interpret it.

Withdrawal limit. A restriction on a payout request or amount within a stated period. Read the exact scope rather than treating every cap as the same rule.

Use bonus terms and withdrawals for account examples. A game result and a request to receive account funds are different stages.

Translate three common phrases into complete information

“S17, DAS”

What does it establish?

The dealer stands on soft 17, and doubling after a split is permitted subject to the rules. You still need payout, permitted totals, split-ace conditions and the remaining game details.

“C$8 win at 1:1”

What are profit and return?

The qualifying C$8 wager earns C$8 profit. Including the returned original stake, total return is C$16.

“20× bonus, 10% contribution”

What else must be calculated?

For an illustrative C$20 bonus-only base, credited wagering required is C$400. At 10% contribution, that corresponds to C$4,000 of eligible stakes, before other conditions.

The promotional example is arithmetic, not a current offer or a recommendation to complete wagering. Naming the base and contribution turns a short phrase into a calculation you can inspect.

Use the definition in its actual context

When a term remains unclear, keep the complete sentence and the game or offer it belongs to. “Maximum bet” in a promotion can mean something different from the game’s own table maximum.

Read rules for a full table record and how to play for the sequence of a round. Keep a spending amount and finish time planned for real-money play, and see responsible gambling for support.

Send corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the term, its context and the point needing clarification.

Blackjack terminology FAQs

What do S17 and H17 mean?

S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17; H17 means the dealer hits soft 17. These describe the dealer's required procedure, not a complete table rule set or an instruction for the player's hand.

What does DAS mean in blackjack rules?

DAS means double after split. Read the table's permitted totals, card-count restrictions and split-ace conditions as well. Permission to double a split hand is different from a recommendation about when that decision is appropriate.

Are blackjack and natural the same term?

Natural commonly means a qualifying initial two-card blackjack: an ace and a ten-value card in conventional play. A three-card 21 and a 21 formed after splitting can have different payout treatment. Use the actual game's definition.

Is a push the same as a win?

No. A push returns the stake without profit under the applicable rules. An ordinary C$10 winning wager paid at 1:1 earns C$10 profit and returns C$20 in total. Read special settlement exceptions in the chosen variant.

Does insurance protect every part of my blackjack stake?

No. It is a separate optional wager associated with dealer blackjack in the conventional context. Read its own cost, qualifying outcome and paytable. It is not a general promise that the main wager cannot lose.

What is the difference between base bet and total stake?

The base bet is the initial main-hand amount. Additional doubles, split stakes and optional wagers can increase the total committed. A selected chip or a description in units should not replace checking all accepted positions.

Does RTP tell me how much of my deposit I will get back?

No. It describes a theoretical return under stated assumptions and a defined stake basis over repeated play. A short session can produce a very different result. Read the rules, strategy and calculation basis behind a quoted percentage.

Why is a wagering multiplier incomplete without contribution?

The base tells you the required credited play; contribution tells you how much eligible staking counts. For an illustrative C$20 bonus at 20× bonus-only wagering, the requirement is C$400. At 10% contribution, C$4,000 of eligible stakes would be needed, before other conditions.
