READ THE CONDITIONS THAT CHANGE THE HAND, THE STAKE AND THE PAYOUT

Blackjack rules describe more than reaching a total below 22. They determine which hands qualify for a blackjack payout, when the dealer draws, which player actions are allowed and what happens to extra stakes if the dealer has blackjack.

Use this guide to read a table’s information panel and create a clear rule record. The examples explain conventional blackjack and selected variations; the actual game’s published rules govern the table you open.

The rule record to make before comparing tables

Write down the exact game and provider, then record the conditions below. A label such as “classic” or “European” is useful for navigation, but is not a complete rule sheet.

  1. Settlement: blackjack payout, ordinary win, push and special exceptions.
  2. Dealer: soft-17 treatment, second-card procedure and blackjack checks.
  3. Doubling: eligible totals, number of cards and doubling after a split.
  4. Splitting: eligible pairs, maximum hands and split-ace restrictions.
  5. Surrender: whether offered, timing and permitted hands.
  6. Structure: deck information, stake limits, optional wagers and any variant-specific fees.

Keep this record beside any decision chart. If a required condition is missing, use the game’s help or official support rather than filling the gap from another table’s name.

Understand the conventional main-hand outcomes

Under conventional rules, a player who busts loses. A surviving hand can win by outranking the dealer or by the dealer busting. A tied ordinary total normally pushes, returning the stake without profit.

A qualifying natural blackjack has different priority from an ordinary 21. For example, 7–4–queen totals 21, but is not an initial ace with a ten-value card. Do not assume that every display of “21” receives the natural-blackjack payout.

Special variants can alter these outcomes. If a game describes an automatic player-21 win, a dealer-22 push or another exception, read the full rule and strategy implications rather than applying the conventional summary.

Loto-Québec’s educational rules summary distinguishes winning, losing and push hands for its stated game. Use the chosen online table’s own conditions for its exact settlement.

Read the blackjack payout as a ratio of profit

A posted 3:2 blackjack payout means three units of profit for two units staked on a qualifying winner. A 6:5 payout means six units of profit for five units staked. The returned original stake is additional to that profit.

On a C$25 qualifying winning blackjack, 3:2 gives C$37.50 profit and C$62.50 total return. At 6:5, profit is C$30 and total return is C$55. The difference is C$7.50 on that one qualifying result.

This arithmetic does not mean every C$25 hand earns either amount. Ordinary wins, pushes, losses and any special settlement use their own conditions. Read the payouts guide before comparing a ratio with a balance movement.

Check the actual rules panel as well as lobby artwork. Record whether the ratio applies to all qualifying blackjacks or has additional conditions.

S17 and H17 describe the dealer’s soft-17 rule

S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17. H17 means the dealer hits soft 17. A dealer ace–6 is the familiar example: it can count as 7 or 17 while the ace counts as 11.

Hard 17 is different. A ten–7 is hard 17, and ace–6–ten also becomes hard 17 because the ace must count as 1. Do not interpret “hits soft 17” as an instruction to hit every 17.

For a worked sequence, ace–6 is soft 17; drawing a ten makes 1 + 6 + 10 = hard 17. The dealer’s next requirement must then be read using that hard total under the actual rules.

Use dealer rules and hard and soft hands when the notation is unfamiliar. Keep the dealer rule visible when choosing a strategy reference.

Separate the hole-card procedure from extra-stake settlement

A hole card is the dealer’s face-down card. A peek is a check for blackjack at the stage specified by the game. Another version may deal the second dealer card later or use a different checking procedure.

The financial question is what happens to doubles and split stakes when dealer blackjack is discovered after you act. Some rule arrangements expose those additional wagers to loss. Do not infer protection simply because the game uses the word “European.”

The Wizard of Odds European analysis specifies a particular no-peek arrangement in which doubles and split stakes are lost to dealer blackjack. That condition belongs in the rule record and strategy assumptions.

As a hypothetical example, a C$12 initial stake fully doubled becomes C$24 committed. If the stated rule loses both amounts to dealer blackjack, the loss is C$24. Read the actual settlement wording before assuming only C$12 is at risk.

Doubling rules define when the extra stake is allowed

“Double on any initial two cards” and “double on hard 9–11 only” are different permissions. A 4–5 is hard 9, while ace–7 is soft 18; a rule limited to hard 9–11 does not grant the same action on both.

Also check whether doubling is permitted after splitting, whether a full matching stake is required and whether any “double for less” option exists. Permission to split does not automatically establish permission to double the resulting hands.

The availability of a double is separate from whether it is the preferred decision. Use the doubling guide and a rule-matched reference to study the latter question.

If a button is unavailable, check the hand’s card count, total and split status first. Compare those facts with the table rule instead of assuming every blackjack game offers the same controls.

Splitting rules need more than a yes-or-no answer

Read which pairs qualify and how many resulting hands are allowed. If two ten-value cards have different ranks, inspect whether the game treats them as a permitted pair rather than assuming identical treatment everywhere.

Then check resplitting, doubling after a split and the treatment of aces. A rule allowing a single additional card on each split ace is a restriction on how those hands continue.

A ten-value card landing on a split ace can produce 21 without qualifying for the natural-blackjack rate. The game’s definition and paytable decide the settlement.

Track the extra stakes as well as the cards. An illustrative C$8 bet split into two C$8 hands commits C$16; doubling one eligible hand adds C$8, making C$24. The split guide explains how to follow each resulting hand separately.

Surrender rules depend on timing and eligibility

Where surrender is offered, it commonly ends an eligible hand for a loss of half the initial stake. For a C$14 stake under that rule, C$7 is lost and C$7 returned.

Early and late surrender are different conditions. In the conventional distinction, early surrender occurs before the dealer checks for blackjack; late surrender follows the check that rules out dealer blackjack. The Wizard of Odds surrender reference explains that timing distinction.

Read which hands and dealer upcards qualify, and when the option is available. A general “surrender” label is incomplete if the timing and exceptions remain unclear.

Use the dedicated surrender guide for the decision context. Closing a game or refusing another card does not itself exercise surrender.

Keep decks, side bets and special variants in context

Deck count is one part of the game description. It does not replace the payout, dealer and player-action conditions when comparing tables. Read the full combination rather than ranking two products from “single deck” or “eight decks” alone.

Optional wagers have separate stakes and paytables. A rule about a suited combination or pair payout may belong to a side bet, not the main hand. The side-bets guide helps separate those records.

For Spanish 21, Blackjack Switch and other special formats, begin with the variant’s own rules. Read any altered deck, exchange mechanic, fee or settlement exception together with the feature being advertised.

The Wizard of Odds rule-variation analysis measures rule changes against stated reference conditions and appropriate strategy adjustments. Its figures should not be treated as a universal percentage for every table carrying a similar name.

Compare two example rule profiles

Profile A

Suppose the information states 3:2 blackjack, S17, doubling on any initial two cards, doubling after splits and no surrender.

Record those permissions exactly. You still need the remaining split, deck and dealer-blackjack settlement details before the description is complete.

Profile B

Suppose it states 6:5 blackjack, H17, hard 9–11 doubling and late surrender.

Do not use Profile A’s chart automatically. The payout, dealer procedure and player options differ even before considering other conditions.

These fictional profiles show how to identify changes between tables. Use basic strategy and odds and house edge to understand the corresponding decision and mathematical questions.

Add the online and live-round procedures to your record

For software and live tables, read betting closure, decision timers, missed-action defaults, reconnection and round-history procedures. A stream freezing does not itself establish that the round stopped or a stake was cancelled.

Keep the game title, time, rule version where supplied and round identifier if you need help. A useful support question identifies the exact hand and condition rather than saying the casino used the wrong rules.

For a first round, return to how to play. Keep a planned spending amount and finish time, and see responsible gambling for support. Send corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the table and specific rule concerned.

Blackjack rules FAQs

Do all online blackjack games use the same rules?

No. Compare the payout, dealer procedure, doubling, splitting, surrender and any special settlement conditions for the exact game. A familiar name or brand does not establish that every table uses one rule set. Keep those details beside any strategy reference.

What is the difference between S17 and H17?

S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17, while H17 means the dealer hits it. Ace–6 is soft 17. A ten–7 is hard 17, so the soft-17 distinction should not be read as a requirement to hit every total of 17.

Does a three-card 21 always receive a blackjack payout?

No. A qualifying natural blackjack is different from another hand totalling 21. Read the initial-hand definition, payout ratio and treatment of split hands. Special variants can have their own exceptions, so use the actual table's settlement rules.

What does 3:2 mean on a C$25 qualifying blackjack?

It means C$37.50 profit on that qualifying winning outcome. Including the returned C$25 stake, total return is C$62.50. At 6:5, the same qualifying stake would earn C$30 profit. These are ratio calculations, not verified current operator payouts.

Can doubles and split stakes be lost to dealer blackjack?

They can under some no-peek or later-check settlement arrangements. Read which extra stakes are exposed and how the game resolves dealer blackjack. Do not assume that only the initial stake is at risk from a broad game name or the presence of a dealer hole card.

Does permission to split mean I can double afterwards?

Not automatically. Doubling after a split is a separate rule. Check eligible totals, split-ace restrictions and the number of cards allowed. Track the accepted stake on each hand so an additional action does not hide the total amount committed.

What is the difference between early and late surrender?

In the conventional distinction, early surrender is available before the dealer checks for blackjack; late surrender follows the check ruling it out. Read the permitted hands and timing in the actual game. Surrender must be offered and exercised as a game option.

Does a frozen video or closed browser cancel an accepted wager?

Do not assume so. Read the game's missed-decision, disconnection and reconnection procedure, and inspect the round history. Keep the time and round reference for support rather than treating the state of one screen as proof that the bet was cancelled.
