A QUICK DECISION REFERENCE WITH ITS RULES AND FALLBACKS KEPT VISIBLE
This blackjack cheat sheet separates surrender, pairs, hard totals and soft totals so you can find the relevant decision quickly. Match the rules first, then use the categories in order. The abbreviations below always include a fallback where an extra-stake action may be unavailable.
The sheet is an educational reference for the stated conventional game. It does not predict cards or establish that a particular operator’s current table uses these rules.
Match these rules before using the sheet
The reference uses a conventional six-deck game paying 3:2 on a qualifying blackjack, with S17: the dealer stands on soft 17. The dealer checks for blackjack with an ace or ten-value upcard before player decisions.
Assume doubling on any initial two cards, doubling after a split (DAS), and eligible late surrender. For the split-hand examples, assume up to four hands, no resplitting aces and one additional card per split ace.
Use a different matching reference for H17, a different deck arrangement or player permission, no-peek settlement, Spanish 21, Blackjack Switch or another special format. This is a total-based reference without card-count information.
Keep the rule record and basic-strategy explanation alongside the sheet while learning. A table name alone does not establish that these assumptions match.
Read the legend and use the categories in order
Action key
H: hit. S: stand. P: split an eligible pair.
D/H: double if permitted; otherwise hit.
D/S: double if permitted; otherwise stand.
R/H: surrender if eligible; otherwise hit.
Lookup order
- Confirm that an ordinary player decision remains.
- Check eligible surrender, including the pair exception.
- Check a permitted pair split.
- Use the hard or soft category and its fallback.
A stands for ace in the card descriptions; “10” as a dealer upcard includes ten-value picture cards. Read ranges inclusively: 3–6 means 3, 4, 5 and 6.
A multi-card hand cannot use an initial-two-card double merely because its total appears in a double row. Use the fallback, and follow any split-ace restriction before considering an ordinary action.
First pass: eligible late surrender
For the stated S17 baseline:
- Hard 15 against 10: R/H.
- Hard 16 against 9, 10 or A: R/H, except a pair of 8s.
This applies to eligible initial hands under the late-surrender rule. A pair of 8s proceeds to its split instruction. A hand that has already taken another card does not regain initial-hand surrender by reaching the same total.
The Wizard of Odds surrender reference distinguishes early and late surrender. Use our surrender guide for the action and its timing.
Pair reference with doubling after split allowed
- A–A or 8–8: P against every dealer upcard.
- 2–2 or 3–3: P against 2–7; H against 8, 9, 10 or A.
- 4–4: P against 5–6; H otherwise.
- 5–5: use the hard-10 row, rather than splitting.
- 6–6: P against 2–6; H otherwise.
- 7–7: P against 2–7; H otherwise.
- 9–9: P against 2–6 and 8–9; S against 7, 10 or A.
- Two ten-value cards: S.
These permissions assume DAS and the stated split limits. If the split limit is reached, use the appropriate unsplit total only where the game permits continued action. A restricted split-ace hand must follow its special procedure.
The Wizard of Odds multi-deck reference distinguishes pair decisions and the DAS condition. The split guide explains the additional stake and resulting hands.
Hard-total reference after surrender and pairs
- 8 or lower: H.
- 9: D/H against 3–6; H otherwise.
- 10: D/H against 2–9; H against 10 or A.
- 11: D/H against 2–10; H against A.
- 12: S against 4–6; H otherwise.
- 13–16: S against 2–6; H otherwise, after any eligible surrender or pair instruction.
- 17–20: S.
A hard hand has no ace currently counted as 11. Ace–6–ten is hard 17 and belongs with the hard category, even though an ace appears among the cards.
For example, hard 12 against dealer 3 uses H, while hard 12 against dealer 4 uses S. Read the full upcard range instead of remembering only a slogan about low dealer cards.
These hard and soft ranges can be compared with OLG’s PlaySmart strategy reference. Use the assumptions and lookup order stated here.
Soft-total reference and the important stand fallback
- Soft 13–14, such as A–2 or A–3: D/H against 5–6; H otherwise.
- Soft 15–16, such as A–4 or A–5: D/H against 4–6; H otherwise.
- Soft 17, such as A–6: D/H against 3–6; H otherwise.
- Soft 18, such as A–7: D/S against 3–6; S against 2, 7 or 8; H against 9, 10 or A.
- Soft 19–20: S.
Any permitted continuing soft hand below the listed totals uses H after pair and special-hand conditions have been addressed. A completed 21 or natural follows the game’s completion procedure.
Soft 18 is the important fallback reminder. If doubling is unavailable against dealer 3, this sheet says stand. It does not turn that D/S into the D/H used by lower soft totals.
For this baseline without card-count information, decline insurance and even money. Optional side-bet decisions are outside this main-hand sheet; read their separate paytables.
Read hard and soft hands and card values if the ace changes make a lookup unclear.

Three worked lookups to check the process
10–6 versus 10
Which category applies first?
For an eligible initial hand, the S17 surrender instruction gives R/H. If surrender is unavailable, the hard-16 fallback is H.
8–8 versus 10
Does the hard-16 instruction apply?
The pair exception keeps this out of the generic surrender instruction. The baseline pair result is P where splitting is permitted.
A–7 versus 3
What if a double cannot be taken?
The soft-18 result is D/S. Double if permitted; otherwise stand. Check the fallback rather than substituting hit automatically.
Describe each lookup using cards, category, upcard, relevant rule and fallback. That makes an incorrect row or missing permission easier to identify during practice.
Common misreads that change the answer
Using only the total. A pair, a soft hand and another hard hand can reach the same number. The lookup order preserves the distinctions.
Skipping the legend. Letters and colours vary between references. D/H and D/S must remain distinguishable even on a small phone screen or a monochrome printout.
Ignoring the hand’s stage. An initial two-card action may no longer be allowed after a hit or on restricted split aces. Follow the actual permission before using a total row.
Using S17 for a different game. H17, no-peek settlement and special formats can change decisions. Choose a matching reference instead of patching one remembered cell.
Reading profit as total return. A correct action does not change payout arithmetic. Use the payouts guide to separate winnings from the returned stake.
Use the sheet as a learning aid
Start with a genuine practice mode where supplied and read its rules. Work on one category, keeping a brief note of the cards, dealer upcard, instruction and your selected action.
After an error, identify the cause: addition, wrong category, wrong dealer column, unavailable action or a rule mismatch. Correct that specific problem before adding speed.
Review accuracy independently of results. A recommended action can lose, and an error can win. A short virtual streak is not evidence that the reference forecasts a real-money session.
When choosing a printable reference, keep the assumptions, legend and surrender exception with the decisions. A cropped image of coloured cells can remove the information needed to read it correctly.
Keep the sheet separate from stakes and promotional conditions
The sheet addresses actions on a hand. It does not prescribe increasing the base stake after a loss, and it does not remove the extra amounts committed by splits and doubles.
For example, a C$7 initial stake fully doubled becomes C$14 at risk. A hypothetical 1:1 winning settlement would earn C$14 profit and return C$28 including that stake. The arithmetic is separate from whether the next card produces a win.
Promotional contribution, maximum stakes and deadlines need their own checks in bonus terms. Keep a planned spending amount and finish time, and see responsible gambling for support.
Send corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the hand, dealer upcard, rule set and specific instruction concerned.
Blackjack cheat-sheet FAQs
Which rules does this cheat sheet use?
A conventional six-deck, 3:2, S17 game with dealer blackjack checks before player actions, initial-two-card doubling, DAS and eligible late surrender. Split assumptions include up to four hands, no resplitting aces and one extra card per split ace. Match the full assumptions before using it.
What do D/H and D/S mean?
D/H means double if permitted, otherwise hit. D/S means double if permitted, otherwise stand. The fallback is part of the instruction. Check whether the action is available on the actual hand instead of treating every unavailable double as a hit.
Which category should I check first?
First establish that a player decision remains. Then check eligible surrender, including the pair exception, before a permitted pair split and the ordinary hard or soft category. A settled natural or restricted split-ace hand must follow the game's own procedure.
Why is a pair of 8s different from ten–6 against dealer 10?
Both total 16, but the sheet explicitly excludes 8–8 from the generic S17 surrender instruction. The pair reference gives split where permitted. Ten–6 uses eligible surrender with a hit fallback under the stated baseline.
Can I use this S17 sheet for H17 or European no-peek blackjack?
Use a matching reference instead. The dealer procedure and extra-stake settlement can change decisions. Special games such as Spanish 21 and Blackjack Switch also need their own rules and strategy assumptions rather than this conventional baseline.
Does the sheet guarantee a winning hand or session?
No. It gives decisions under stated assumptions, not a forecast of the cards. Review whether you read the correct category and rule, independently of the result. Keep a planned spending amount and finish time rather than expecting a reference to recover losses.
What should I retain when choosing a printable chart?
Keep its rule assumptions, legend, fallback instructions and exceptions with the decision cells. Make sure the reference remains readable without colour alone. A cropped chart can omit the information needed to choose the correct action.
Does following the sheet complete promotional wagering?
No. The game decision and promotional progress are separate. Read the wagering base, eligible contribution, maximum stakes, deadline and withdrawal conditions. Correct play does not itself establish that a particular wager qualifies or that an offer is suitable.
