FIX THE OPENING UNIT AND KEEP EVERY EXTRA STAKE VISIBLE

Flat betting in blackjack means using the same opening stake from round to round. A win does not automatically raise it, and a loss does not trigger a recovery bet. The fixed unit makes the initial wager straightforward to record, but the amount committed during a hand can still grow through doubles, splits and optional wagers.

This guide follows a complete example ledger, explains how to choose and record a unit, and separates stake sizing from card decisions. All monetary examples are fictional; they do not establish an actual casino’s minimum, rules or payout.

Define exactly what stays flat

In this guide, one unit means the main opening wager on one position at the start of each round. If that unit is C$5, each new round starts at C$5 regardless of the previous result.

Opening stake

The fixed amount before the initial deal. This is the part held constant in the model.

Additional stakes

Money added for permitted doubles, splits or separate optional wagers. Record it independently.

Round result

All settlement returns minus all stakes committed in the round. It is not the opening chip alone.

If you instead require the entire round never to exceed one unit, that is a different constraint and can affect which additional actions you can fund. State that rule explicitly rather than mixing the two definitions.

Use the betting-systems overview to distinguish fixed stakes from outcome-based progressions.

A five-round ledger with the same C$5 opening stake

Assume a fictional C$100 starting balance, one C$5 opening position per round, ordinary wins paying 1:1 profit and a natural paying 3:2. A permitted full double occurs in the final round. There are no side bets or fees.

The table shows total money staked during each round, settlement return including any returned stake, and net profit or loss. All amounts are Canadian dollars.

Illustrative flat-betting record in C$
Round Staked Return Net
1: win 5.00 10.00 +5.00
2: loss 5.00 0.00 −5.00
3: push 5.00 5.00 0.00
4: natural 5.00 12.50 +7.50
5: double 10.00 0.00 −10.00

Initial wagers total C$25. The last round adds C$5, making C$30 committed across the five rounds. Settlement returns total C$27.50, so the net result is a C$2.50 loss and the closing balance is C$97.50.

The opening stake stayed flat even though one round cost C$10. A push returned C$5 without creating profit, and the natural returned C$12.50 rather than producing C$12.50 profit.

This selected record is bookkeeping, not a forecast or a measured house edge. Read blackjack payouts for the distinction between profit and total return.

Doubles and splits can exceed the opening unit

A fixed opening wager does not remove the game’s additional-stake decisions. Under rules permitting the actions, a C$5 hand doubled for another C$5 has C$10 committed.

Splitting an eligible C$5 hand into two C$5 hands also commits C$10. If one of those hands is then doubled for another C$5, the round has C$15 committed.

That last example is not a universal maximum. Further permitted splits, doubles, multiple positions or side wagers can create other totals.

If the doubled C$10 hand wins at ordinary 1:1 and the other C$5 hand loses, returns are C$20 against C$15 committed: C$5 net profit. Record the losing hand as well as the winning one.

Our doubling guide and splitting guide explain the hand actions separately from a stake progression.

Choose a unit separately from a session spending limit

Start by defining the amount and time you are prepared to spend on entertainment. Do not derive a larger stake from a desired profit or an amount you want to recover.

For arithmetic only, C$120 divided by a C$5 opening unit equals 24 units. This does not guarantee 24 rounds or set an absolute 24-round maximum.

Additional stakes can consume money faster, while returned funds can be wagered again. The number of rounds depends on actual results and decisions rather than the starting balance divided by the first chip.

Check whether the remaining amount supports an opening wager and the additional decisions you may face. Do not plan the session using opening chips while ignoring the potential extra commitments.

If the affordable unit is below the actual table minimum, the plan does not fit that table. Increasing the spending amount is not a necessary step in making it fit.

Check limits, increments and repeat-bet controls

Read the accepted opening minimum, maximum and chip increments for the selected table. A C$5 teaching unit is not a statement that every game accepts C$5.

Check how the game handles a double or split relative to its limits. Do not assume that an opening-stake maximum answers every additional-stake question.

Inspect repeat-bet or similar controls before confirming. Read whether they repeat one main position, several positions or optional wagers as well. A retained side-bet chip changes the total even if the main opening stake is unchanged.

After changing table, device or game version, inspect the next accepted wager again. The interface and available denominations may differ; a familiar control name does not establish its exact behaviour.

Keep basic strategy matched to the actual game

Flat betting sets an amount before the deal. It does not decide whether a hard total should hit, whether a pair should split or whether doubling is available.

OLG PlaySmart describes basic strategy through hand decisions. Use our rule-specific strategy guide to understand its assumptions, including dealer rules and permitted actions.

A player can use a fixed opening unit while still making the additional stakes called for by a matching strategy reference. Conversely, refusing every double or split simply to keep the whole round at one chip changes how the hand is played.

Record the constraint honestly. A fixed opening-unit example and a strict one-chip total-exposure example should not be compared as if they use identical playing decisions.

A fixed stake does not remove the house edge

Consider a hypothetical game model assigning an expected loss of 0.5% of initial wagering, with later hand actions already reflected in that rate. The figure is an assumption for this example, not a verified rate for all blackjack.

Eighty rounds starting at C$5 would total C$400 of initial wagers if all eighty rounds were played. Under the model, expected loss is C$400 × 0.005 = C$2.

The calculation does not promise that a balance can fund eighty rounds, predict an actual C$2 result or impose a maximum loss. It also does not apply the same initial-wager percentage to a different total that includes additional stakes.

Flat betting makes initial turnover straightforward to calculate. It does not change the rules, payouts or expected result per unit under the assumed game model.

Read odds and house edge for stake bases and the difference between expected loss and a session’s actual result.

Compare records without changing the unit after the fact

A flat record stays at its chosen opening unit through both wins and losses. Raising the next stake to recover a loss introduces a progression; increasing it after wins introduces another rule.

The Martingale and Paroli comparison includes every path in a small teaching model. It shows why a high count of profitable sequences does not by itself establish an advantage.

When comparing records, use the same time or round horizon and include all losses, unfinished sequences and extra wagers. Do not let one method keep playing until it wins while stopping the other at a fixed point.

Using a smaller fixed unit also changes money exposed. That is an amount comparison, not proof that a system improves the cards.

Check three fixed-unit distinctions

Twenty-four base units

Does C$120 at a C$5 unit guarantee 24 rounds?

No. It gives 24 opening units arithmetically. Extra stakes and actual results change how many rounds the amount can support.

Five-round ledger

What is the net from C$30 staked and C$27.50 returned?

C$27.50 minus C$30 equals a C$2.50 loss. A C$100 starting balance becomes C$97.50 in the stated example.

Split and one double

How much do two C$5 hands and one extra C$5 double commit?

C$15 in total. If the doubled hand returns C$20 and the other returns nothing, the whole round earns C$5 net.

Use genuine practice play where available to learn how a game records accepted stakes and returns. A good practice result does not establish future profitability.

Keep a record that shows the complete session

For each round, note the opening amount, additional stakes, settlement return and net result. Keep side wagers separately identifiable, then include them in the total.

At the end, reconcile the balance with deposits, withdrawals, fees or other adjustments if any occurred. A starting-to-closing balance comparison can otherwise confuse a payment movement with a game result.

Read bonus terms separately. A small fixed main stake does not prove compliance if an offer measures all positions, extra stakes or optional wagers differently.

Finish at the planned time or spending limit rather than increasing the unit to recover losses. Our responsible gambling page provides support information. Send corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the exact calculation and game-rule assumption.

Flat-betting blackjack FAQs

What does flat betting mean in this guide?

The main opening stake on one position stays the same from round to round, regardless of earlier wins or losses. Additional stakes during a hand are recorded separately. A rule that caps the entire round at one unit is a different constraint and should be identified explicitly.

Can I double or split while using a fixed opening unit?

The opening-unit definition allows additional stakes where the game permits them. A C$5 full double commits C$10, and two C$5 split hands also commit C$10 before further action. Record all money committed; the fixed first chip does not make the whole round cost only C$5.

Does C$120 at a C$5 unit guarantee 24 rounds?

No. It equals 24 opening units, but additional stakes and actual results affect how many rounds are supported. Returned money can also be wagered again. The division is neither a guaranteed session length nor an absolute maximum number of rounds.

What does the five-round example show?

Every round opens at C$5, but one doubled hand adds another C$5. Initial wagers total C$25, total stakes are C$30 and returns are C$27.50. The example loses C$2.50 overall, leaving C$97.50 from a C$100 start. It is bookkeeping, not a forecast.

Does a push create profit I can add to the balance?

A normal push in the example returns the stake without net profit or loss. If C$5 was deducted when betting and C$5 returns, the balance is restored. Adding another C$5 as profit would count that returned stake twice.

Does flat betting remove the house edge?

No. Keeping the opening unit fixed does not change the game's rules, payouts or expected result per unit in a stated model. A hypothetical expected-loss calculation is also not a cap on actual losses or proof that the planned number of rounds can be completed.

Should I refuse every double to keep my bet flat?

That would impose a fixed whole-round exposure rule rather than the fixed opening-unit definition used here. It also changes hand decisions. Read a basic-strategy reference matched to the game and distinguish those decisions from the amount placed before the deal.

What should I check before using a repeat-bet control?

Read which stakes it repeats, including other positions and optional wagers, then inspect the accepted amount. The main chip staying unchanged does not establish that the whole round's initial exposure is unchanged. Recheck after changing table, game version or access route.
