UNDERSTAND THE EXTRA STAKE AND THE ONE-CARD COMMITMENT TOGETHER
An ordinary blackjack double adds an extra stake, gives the hand one further card and then ends that hand’s player decisions. A full double matches the initial wager, so C$10 becomes C$20 committed. The action combines a money decision with a restriction on further draws.
This guide explains when doubles are permitted, the strategy examples for a stated rule set and how to read the resulting payout. A double is not a promise that the next card wins or that the final total improves.
What doubling down does to the hand
Under an ordinary full-double rule, you add an amount equal to the initial stake and receive exactly one additional card. After that card, the hand stands according to the game’s procedure.
You cannot use the ordinary hit button again simply because that one card leaves an awkward total. The limited draw is part of the action you accepted when adding the stake.
OLG’s PlaySmart doubling explanation connects the extra wager with the one-card restriction. Check the actual game information for permitted starting hands and any special exception.
Keep the action separate from changing a chip selection before the deal. Raising a future initial bet does not create the same hand procedure as doubling a dealt hand.
Follow the complete doubling procedure
- Read the rule: confirm the eligible total, card count and split status.
- Read the hand: identify whether it is hard, soft or a pair and note the dealer upcard.
- Check the reference: confirm that it matches the game’s rules and gives a double instruction.
- Confirm the amount: inspect the extra stake and the resulting total committed.
- Follow the one-card result: check the accepted action, final cards and settlement record.
On a timed live table, understand the control before the decision window begins. If the button or amount is unclear, use genuine practice where provided or ask official support before funding a session.
The how-to-play guide explains where doubling fits within a complete round.
Check which doubles the table actually permits
“Double on any initial two cards” and “double on hard 9–11 only” are different permissions. A 4–5 is hard 9, while ace–7 is soft 18; a hard-total restriction does not grant the same choice on both.
Read whether doubling after a split is allowed, commonly abbreviated DAS. Also check split-ace restrictions. Permission to split does not automatically establish permission to double each resulting hand.
If a three-card hand reaches 11, it does not qualify for a two-card double merely because the total matches an example. The hand’s stage is part of the rule.
Record the conditions using blackjack rules and the glossary. Availability tells you what can be selected; strategy addresses which available action the reference prefers.
The baseline behind this page’s decision examples
Assume conventional six-deck blackjack with a 3:2 qualifying natural payout and S17: the dealer stands on soft 17. Dealer blackjack checks with ace or ten-value upcards occur before player decisions.
Assume initial-two-card doubling, DAS and eligible late surrender. The examples are a total-based reference without card-count information; split aces follow their separate one-card restrictions.
Use a matching reference for a different rule set. H17, restricted doubles, different deck information and no-peek settlement can alter the comparison.
The basic-strategy guide explains the lookup process. Keep eligible surrender and pair instructions ahead of an ordinary total row.
Hard-total doubles under the stated S17 baseline
For eligible initial hands after the earlier categories are considered:
- Hard 9: double against dealer 3–6; otherwise hit.
- Hard 10: double against 2–9; hit against 10 or A.
- Hard 11: double against 2–10; hit against A.
If a listed double is unavailable, these hard-total examples use hit as the ordinary fallback. They do not instruct you to add money to force a button to become available.
A pair of 5s is treated as hard 10 in this reference, rather than split. Pair status still needs checking for other totals.
The Wizard of Odds multi-deck reference sets out doubles and fallbacks within an ordered strategy. The cheat sheet keeps those categories together.
Soft doubles and the stand fallback on soft 18
Under the same baseline, eligible soft 13–14 doubles against 5–6; soft 15–16 against 4–6; and soft 17 against 3–6. Those examples use hit if a double is unavailable.
Soft 18 also doubles against 3–6 when permitted, but its fallback is stand. Ace–7 against dealer 3 therefore should not be read as “double, otherwise hit.”
Ace flexibility helps explain the hand category, but the one-card restriction still applies after doubling. The ace can fall to 1, leaving a lower final total on which no ordinary further hit remains.
Read hard and soft hands for the arithmetic and hit or stand for ordinary fallback decisions. A large displayed total without its category is incomplete information.
A worked double from C$10 to settlement
Consider an imaginary round under the baseline rules and ordinary 1:1 winning-hand settlement:
- You place C$10 and receive 5–6, hard 11, against dealer 6.
- You take a permitted full double, adding C$10. The accepted commitment becomes C$20.
- Your one additional card is a ten-value card, making 21. Your player actions on that hand finish.
- If the dealer finishes on ordinary 18, the doubled hand wins C$20 profit and returns C$40 including the C$20 stake.
The three-card 21 is not an initial natural blackjack. The hypothetical result therefore uses the ordinary winning-hand rate stated in the example, not a 3:2 natural rate.
If the one additional card had been a 2 instead, the final hand would be 13 and would still have completed its player decisions. Doubling did not buy an unlimited sequence of extra cards.

Read the full stake when the doubled hand settles
For a conventional full double of C$12, the initial and extra C$12 make C$24 committed. Under ordinary 1:1 settlement:
- A qualifying ordinary win: C$24 profit and C$48 total return.
- A push: C$24 returned without profit.
- A loss: C$24 lost, rather than only the initial C$12.
Keep a separate record for any side bet. Its result need not match the main hand, and it should not be silently included in the doubled-stake calculation.
Use payouts to distinguish profit from total return. A game history showing the original stake, extra stake and final return is more informative than one balance change.
Handle partial doubles, split hands and later dealer checks carefully
If a game explicitly offers doubling for less, read the amount and one-card procedure before treating it as a full double. In a hypothetical permitted C$10 plus C$4 action, C$14 is committed; it is not C$20 simply because the button uses the word double.
After a split, identify which hand is active and whether DAS is allowed. An extra stake on one resulting hand does not automatically double the other hand.
Also read dealer-blackjack settlement in no-peek or later-check games. The Wizard of Odds European analysis describes a particular arrangement where extra double and split stakes can be lost to dealer blackjack. This differs from assuming a completed prior check.
Special products may advertise other mechanics, but their own rules must explain them. Ordinary surrender should not be assumed to remain available after a double.
Keep total exposure and promotional limits visible
Plan the possible extra stakes before entering a round. An initial amount that fits a spending plan may create a larger commitment through a double or several split hands.
If a promotion has a maximum stake, read how its terms treat doubles, splits and combined wagers. Do not assume the initial chip alone is the amount used for every promotional limit.
A correct game decision also does not establish promotional contribution or withdrawal eligibility. Use bonus terms and withdrawals for those separate account questions.
Never treat an unavailable extra stake as a reason to increase funding during play. Follow the appropriate fallback and the session plan.
Check three doubling details before adding speed
Full double
What does C$9 become?
A full matching C$9 extra stake makes C$18 committed. A hypothetical ordinary 1:1 win earns C$18 profit and returns C$36 including the stake.
One-card result
Can an ordinary doubled hand hit again?
No. The ordinary action gives one additional card, then ends that hand’s player decisions under the stated rule.
Soft-18 fallback
A–7 versus 3, double unavailable?
The stated S17 baseline uses stand as its fallback. It is different from the hit fallback on the lower soft-total examples.
Use a genuine practice mode where supplied to inspect the control, amount and final hand. Check the rules and decision accuracy separately from whether a particular extra card wins.
Use the action within a planned session
Doubling is a rule-defined hand action, not a stake progression for recovering earlier losses. A recommended decision can still lose the whole amount committed.
Keep a planned spending amount and finish time, and understand the accepted-action and connection procedures before live play. Retain the round reference if an amount or result needs explaining.

Doubling-down blackjack FAQs
What does a full double down do?
Under the ordinary rule, it adds a stake matching the initial wager, gives one further card and then ends that hand's player decisions. A C$10 initial stake plus a C$10 double commits C$20. Check the actual game's permissions and procedure.
Can I hit again if the doubled hand has a low total?
Not after an ordinary double under the stated rule. The one-card restriction applies even if the final total is awkward. Read any special-product exception in its own rules rather than assuming the normal hit option remains available.
Which hard totals double in this page's baseline?
For eligible initial hands under the stated six-deck S17 reference, hard 9 doubles against 3–6, hard 10 against 2–9 and hard 11 against 2–10. Earlier surrender and pair checks still apply. Those hard examples use hit when a double is unavailable.
What is the fallback for soft 18 against dealer 3?
Under the stated S17 baseline, double if permitted, otherwise stand. It does not share the hit fallback used by the lower soft-total double examples. Match the rules and hand stage before applying the reference.
Does reaching 21 after a double earn the natural-blackjack rate?
A three-card 21 is different from a qualifying initial two-card natural. Read the actual settlement rule. In this guide's ordinary 1:1 example, a C$20 committed doubled hand that wins earns C$20 profit and returns C$40 including the stake.
Can I double after splitting a pair?
Only where the rules permit it, commonly described as DAS. Check eligible totals and split-ace restrictions as well. Identify the active resulting hand and its accepted stake; doubling one hand does not automatically double another.
Can extra double stakes be lost to dealer blackjack?
They can under some no-peek or later-check settlement arrangements. Read the exact dealer procedure and extra-stake treatment. Do not apply a prior-peek strategy assumption merely because a table has a familiar blackjack name.
Does a strategy double override a promotional maximum stake?
No. Game decisions and promotional conditions are separate. Read how the offer treats initial stakes, doubles, splits and combined wagers. Keep the accepted total and follow the session spending plan rather than increasing funding to force an action.
