SEPARATE THE PROFIT, THE RETURNED STAKE AND THE ACCOUNT BALANCE
Blackjack payouts are easiest to read when you keep three amounts separate: what was staked, what was won or lost, and what returned after settlement. A 3:2 qualifying blackjack earns 1.5 times the stake in profit; its total return also includes the original stake.
This guide works through ordinary wins, naturals, pushes, surrender, doubles and split-hand results. All currency examples use illustrative Canadian-dollar amounts and the explicitly stated settlement assumptions.
The three amounts behind a payout
Stake is the amount committed to the wager. Additional doubles, splits or optional bets can increase the round’s commitment beyond its initial main stake.
Profit or loss is the net result after accounting for the stake. For a C$12 winning wager at 1:1, profit is C$12.
Total return is the amount paid back from settlement, including the returned stake where applicable. That C$12 ordinary win returns C$24 in total.
OLG’s PlaySmart round explanation distinguishes wins, pushes and losses. Read the actual game’s payout and qualifying-outcome definitions before applying a ratio.
A balance credit of C$24 is therefore not automatically C$24 of profit. The accepted stake must be included in the calculation.
Common payout ratios applied to a C$12 wager
1:1 ordinary win
Profit: C$12 × 1 = C$12.
Total return: C$12 stake + C$12 profit = C$24.
3:2 qualifying blackjack
Profit: C$12 × 3/2 = C$18.
Total return: C$12 + C$18 = C$30.
6:5 qualifying blackjack
Profit: C$12 × 6/5 = C$14.40.
Total return: C$12 + C$14.40 = C$26.40.
The 3:2 versus 6:5 difference is C$3.60 profit on that one qualifying C$12 blackjack. It is not a payment received on every hand.
The Wizard of Odds rules reference distinguishes ordinary winning wagers from qualifying blackjack and discusses payout variations. Check the current rules panel rather than relying only on lobby artwork.
A natural blackjack is different from another 21
In conventional play, a qualifying natural is an ace with a ten-value card on the initial two-card hand. A 5–6–king totals 21 but has three cards.
Likewise, an ace receiving a ten-value card after a split can have different treatment. The game’s split-hand and payout rules decide whether that result qualifies for a special rate.
A displayed 21 is therefore not enough information to calculate the credit. Identify the cards, hand stage, dealer outcome and applicable rule.
Use card values, splitting and rules to establish the qualifying outcome before multiplying a stake.
A C$100 balance ledger shows what the credit means
Assume a simple cash-only balance of C$100, one C$12 wager, no fees, no other wagers and no promotional restrictions. Placing the stake leaves C$88 before settlement.
- Ordinary 1:1 win: C$24 returns; the balance becomes C$112. Net profit is C$12.
- Qualifying 3:2 blackjack: C$30 returns; the balance becomes C$118. Net profit is C$18.
- Push: C$12 returns; the balance becomes C$100. Net result is zero.
- Loss: nothing returns; the balance remains C$88. Net loss is C$12.
- Accepted half-stake surrender: C$6 returns; the balance becomes C$94. Net loss is C$6.
The blackjack credit is C$30, but the balance has increased by C$18 from its starting value, because the C$12 stake was already deducted.
This ledger is an arithmetic model, not a description of every operator’s screen layout. Some histories display profit and stake in separate entries; inspect the labels and accepted amounts.
A push and surrender return different amounts
A conventional push returns the stake without profit. It is not an ordinary win at 1:1: that win would return both the stake and an equal profit.
Half-stake surrender loses half the initial wager and returns the remainder under its eligibility rules. Returning C$6 from a C$12 stake is a C$6 loss, not a C$6 win.
Read whether surrender is early or late and whether the hand qualifies. An unaccepted action or closing the screen is not a settled half-stake result.
The surrender guide explains the timing, while dealer rules explains which completed hands are compared or settled earlier.
Calculate a double using the entire committed stake
A full double of an initial C$12 adds another C$12, making C$24 committed. Under ordinary 1:1 winning-hand settlement, a win earns C$24 profit and returns C$48.
In the same simple C$100 ledger, committing C$24 leaves C$76 before settlement. A C$48 return produces a final C$124 balance, or C$24 net profit.
A push returns C$24 and restores C$100. A loss returns nothing and leaves C$76. Calculating only the first C$12 would understate the amount exposed.
A doubled three-card 21 is not automatically a 3:2 natural. Read doubling for the one-card restriction and qualifying-hand distinction.

Combine split-hand returns before judging the round
Suppose an initial C$12 pair is split into two C$12 hands, then one takes a permitted full double. Total commitment becomes C$12 + C$12 + C$12 = C$36.
If the doubled C$24 hand wins at ordinary 1:1, it returns C$48. If the other C$12 hand loses, it returns nothing. The combined return is C$48 against C$36 committed: C$12 net profit.
In the cash-only C$100 model, the commitment leaves C$64; the C$48 credit gives a C$112 closing balance. The winning hand’s C$24 profit is not the round’s net profit because the other hand lost C$12.
Keep each hand’s accepted stake, extra amounts and outcome in the record. The split guide includes further mixed-result examples and hand restrictions.
Insurance and other optional wagers need separate entries
A conventional C$10 insurance wager winning at 2:1 earns C$20 profit and returns C$30 from that wager. The main hand can have a different result.
For example, if a C$20 non-natural main hand loses to dealer blackjack while its C$10 insurance wins, the C$30 return matches the C$30 combined commitment. The round is level under those assumptions.
Other side bets have their own qualifying combinations and paytables. An attractive multiple does not establish how often the outcome occurs or whether the stake is included in a displayed amount.
Read insurance and even money and side bets separately from the main-hand payout.
Read stake increments, rounding and currency
Use the amount the game actually accepted. If an illustrative C$7.50 qualifying blackjack is accepted and paid exactly at 3:2, profit is C$11.25 and total return C$18.75.
A table’s chip increments, minimum stake and currency precision can limit which amounts are accepted. Read its published settlement and rounding rules rather than assuming every theoretical fraction will appear unchanged.
Keep currencies consistent. A payout in one account currency and its converted value in a bank or wallet are different calculations. Identify any conversion and fee separately before comparing the received amount.
Also read whether an advertised multiple denotes profit or a total return including stake. When labels are unclear, use the game’s explicit worked rules or ask support rather than supplying your own interpretation.
A payout ratio is not the probability of winning
3:2 describes the qualifying payout, not a three-in-two chance of an event. Similarly, a 2:1 optional-wager payoff does not mean it wins half the time or guarantees a favourable expectation.
A theoretical return percentage or house-edge figure also has a different purpose. Its calculation depends on rules, strategy and the stake basis; it does not specify the credit on your next individual hand.
Read odds and house edge for that distinction. To check an actual round, begin with the qualifying outcome and accepted stake rather than a long-run percentage.
S17 and H17 are dealer drawing conditions. They do not themselves say whether a natural pays 3:2, 6:5 or another stated ratio; record those conditions separately.
Check three payout calculations
C$8 natural at 3:2
What are profit and total return?
C$8 × 3/2 gives C$12 profit. Add the returned C$8 stake for C$20 total return, assuming a qualifying winning natural.
C$9 fully doubled
What returns on an ordinary 1:1 win?
C$18 is committed. Profit is C$18 and total return is C$36. Calculate using both the initial and added stake.
C$100 balance, C$12 push
Does the final balance become C$112?
No. In the simple ledger, staking C$12 first leaves C$88. Returning the C$12 stake restores C$100 without profit.
Use genuine practice where supplied to read the accepted stake and settlement display. Keep arithmetic accuracy separate from whether a sample hand happened to win.
Separate a settled game return from a withdrawal
A game settlement credits or debits the account under the game’s conditions. Receiving money through a bank or wallet is a later account process with its own receiving method, review and transaction record.
Cash and promotional balances, pending requests and restrictions can also affect what the account shows as eligible to withdraw. Read bonus terms and withdrawals before treating every displayed credit as immediately receivable cash.
For an unclear result, retain the game, round reference, cards, paytable, accepted stakes and settlement entries. Keep a planned spending amount and finish time, and see responsible gambling for support. Send corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the calculation concerned.
Blackjack payout FAQs
What is the difference between profit and total return?
Profit excludes the original stake. Total return includes the stake returned with settlement where applicable. A C$12 ordinary win paid at 1:1 earns C$12 profit and returns C$24 in total. Include the stake when comparing the credit with the starting balance.
What does a C$12 blackjack pay at 3:2?
For a qualifying winning natural, profit is C$18 and total return C$30 including the original C$12 stake. At 6:5, the same qualifying wager earns C$14.40 profit and returns C$26.40. Read the actual game's definition and payout.
Does every hand totalling 21 receive a natural-blackjack payout?
No. A qualifying initial two-card ace with a ten-value card is different from a three-card 21, and split hands can have different treatment. Identify the cards, hand stage and settlement rules before applying a natural payout ratio.
Why does a C$30 blackjack credit increase my C$100 balance by only C$18?
In the simple C$12 wager model, the stake first reduces C$100 to C$88. The C$30 settlement then creates C$118. The net increase is C$18 because part of the credit is the returned C$12 stake, not additional profit.
How is a full double included in the payout?
Use the full committed amount. An initial C$12 plus a C$12 double commits C$24. A qualifying ordinary win at 1:1 earns C$24 profit and returns C$48. A push returns C$24, while a loss loses C$24 under those assumptions.
Can a winning split hand overstate the overall round's profit?
Yes, if you ignore other hands. Combine all accepted stakes and returns. In the worked example, a C$48 return against C$36 committed gives C$12 net profit, even though the winning doubled hand by itself earned C$24 profit.
Is a push or surrender counted as a win?
A conventional push returns the full stake without profit. Half-stake surrender returns half and loses half under its eligibility rules. Neither is an ordinary 1:1 win. Keep the accepted outcome and net result separate from the amount credited.
Does a game payout mean the amount is ready to reach my bank?
Not automatically. A game settlement and an account withdrawal are different stages. Read cash and promotional balance conditions, pending requests, review and the supported receiving method. Keep game and payment transaction records separate when checking amounts.
