TWO HANDS, ONE EXCHANGE AND DIFFERENT SETTLEMENT RULES
Blackjack Switch starts with two equal wagers and introduces an option to exchange the second cards of the two hands. That flexibility comes with altered payouts and dealer-22 settlement. It is a separate variant, not ordinary multi-hand blackjack with a free extra control.
This guide explains the exchange, shows fixed card-reading examples and separates a natural from a switched 21. Check the actual version before matching strategy or assuming a Canadian operator offers the game.
Start by counting both opening wagers
Under the conventional Switch structure, you place equal stakes on two hands. A displayed $5 per hand means $10 initially committed, before a side bet, split or double. Do not read a per-hand minimum as the total price of the round.
The Massachusetts regulator’s published Switch rules define the exchange as a one-time option involving the second cards dealt to those two hands. That document illustrates a rule set; it does not establish current Canadian game availability.
The switching choice happens at its specified stage, before ordinary hand decisions. It does not let you exchange any later hit card, swap a dealer card or move whichever player card you prefer.
Our games hub compares Switch with other variants. The multi-hand guide covers controlling several hands without assuming that a card-exchange permission is included.
Which cards can you switch?
Label the first and second card in each opening hand. In the standard exchange, the first cards stay in their original hands, while the second cards can change places with each other once.
Declining the switch keeps both original hands. Choosing it changes both hands together. You are not improving one hand while pretending the other has stayed unchanged; the pair of resulting hands must be evaluated together.
A software layout may mark the exchangeable cards or highlight a switch control. Establish which cards were dealt second and what the confirmation does before selecting it. Read the active version’s help rather than relying on a familiar position on the screen.
The examples below are fixed reading exercises with no wager, random deal or cash prize. They show the mechanical exchange only. A strategy decision also needs the dealer upcard and matching rules.
Two card-exchange examples
Example one: identify the second cards
Hand A receives 8, then 4. Hand B receives 5, then queen. The opening totals are 12 and 15.
Show the permitted exchange
The 4 and queen exchange places. Hand A becomes 8 + queen = 18. Hand B becomes 5 + 4 = 9. The first cards, 8 and 5, stay in place. This demonstrates the exchange, not whether switching is optimal.
Example two: create 21 by switching
Hand A receives ace, then 7. Hand B receives 9, then king. The second cards are the 7 and king.
Show the switched totals
After the exchange, hand A is ace + king = 21, and hand B is 9 + 7 = 16. Under the stated standard rule, the switched 21 is not an original natural. The other hand has changed too.
Do not use these examples as a shortcut for all switching choices. A result that looks stronger on one hand can leave a weaker companion hand, and the dealer upcard can affect the comparison.
For card values and flexible aces, see our card values guide. Keep the order of the original cards with any Switch situation you want to review.
A switched ace and ten-value card is not an original natural
The cited regulator document distinguishes an opening blackjack from a 21 created by switching or splitting. That difference matters at settlement even though both hands display the same point total.
In the commonly described Switch rules, winning original naturals pay even money, while switched 21 follows ordinary-hand treatment. Read the actual game’s definition and payout rather than carrying over a conventional 3:2 assumption.
On a fictional $10 stake, a winning natural at 1:1 earns $10 profit and returns $20 including the original stake. A conventional 3:2 natural would earn $15 profit on that amount. That comparison concerns one payout, not the whole house edge of either game.
Michael Shackleford’s Switch analysis discusses the exchange, natural payout and dealer-22 rule together. It also distinguishes rule variations, so check the assumptions before using its strategy reference.
Dealer 22: a push for surviving ordinary hands
In the standard Switch model discussed here, a dealer total of exactly 22 pushes against surviving ordinary player hands instead of paying them as conventional blackjack winners. An eligible original natural retains its stated exception. A hand that has already busted is not restored.
Ordinary 20 survives
If the dealer finishes at exactly 22, the surviving ordinary 20 pushes under this rule. The original main stake is returned with no profit.
Player already busted
A player hand that went over 21 has lost. A later dealer 22 does not turn that busted hand into a push.
Original natural
A qualifying original natural keeps its stated winning treatment against dealer 22. A switched 21 does not automatically receive that exception.
Check exact totals. The special treatment of 22 does not mean every dealer bust pushes, and it does not mean every player tie wins. Read the active version’s complete settlement rules.
This is a major reason ordinary blackjack strategy cannot simply be reused unchanged. The expected consequences of drawing or standing differ when some dealer outcomes push instead of paying an ordinary win.
Follow the round in the correct order
- Place both equal opening wagers. Include any optional side-bet amount separately in your total.
- Read the two hands and dealer upcard. Identify which player cards were dealt second.
- Follow the dealer-blackjack procedure. Use the version’s stated check and insurance sequence.
- Make the switching decision. Evaluate both resulting hands together, using an appropriate reference.
- Play the hands. Make the permitted hit, stand, double or split decisions under Switch rules.
- Check settlement. Distinguish original naturals, switched 21, ordinary surviving hands and busts.
The precise interface and timing belong to the actual game. If a control is unclear, use its help screen before paying. A live timer and software presentation can create different practical conditions even when a rule label looks familiar.
Switching strategy and playing strategy are separate tasks
The first task compares keeping the original pair of hands with exchanging the second cards. It is a combined decision involving both hands and the dealer upcard, rather than a rule to make the single highest-looking total.
The second task is how to play each resulting hand under the variant’s rules. The dealer-22 push can change those choices from conventional blackjack. A chart designed for ordinary blackjack is not a complete Switch reference.
Record decks, dealer soft 17, the natural definition, payout, dealer-blackjack check, doubles, split permissions and the exact 22 treatment. Match the reference to that set of assumptions.
Do not treat a simplified switching slogan as a fully optimal calculation. A short reference can trade detail for ease of use. Read its scope, exceptions and assumptions before using it to review a hand.
Our basic strategy guide explains matching a reference, while odds and house edge separates expected return from a short session’s result.
Allow for doubles and splits after the two opening bets
Two $5 opening hands start with $10 committed. If both hands are doubled under the stated permissions, the combined stake becomes $20. Splits and side bets would need additional allowance.
For another fictional example, suppose one of the two $5 hands is split once. There are now three $5 hands in total, for $15 committed. If all three are doubled, the combined stake reaches $30. This assumes those actions are permitted and excludes further splits.
Those are accounting models, not playing recommendations. The eligible cards, dealer upcard and actual rules determine the decisions. A split limit is not a requirement to keep adding hands.
Set the round allowance within an overall spending limit. Do not use a small per-hand figure to conceal from yourself that two opening stakes are required. Read our split and double guides for the separate stake effects.
The optional match wager is not the switching decision
Some Switch versions have a separate matching side bet based on the initial player cards. It has its own paytable and eligibility conditions. It is not the same as placing the two equal main wagers.
Check whether the side bet is assessed on the originally dealt cards and how ranks or combinations are counted. Do not assume that switching later can improve a side bet that has already been determined.
Keep the side-bet stake and payout separate from the main-hand ledger. A possible top prize does not describe the expected return of the entire game or change the dealer-22 rule. Our side-bet guide explains those distinctions.

Practise the exchange before considering paid play
Use the fixed examples to identify second cards and recalculate both hands. They involve no random game or cash prize. If an external virtual-chip version is available, check whether its rules match and whether an account is required.
On a phone, locate the exchange control, selected hand, two opening stakes and history. Establish how confirmation works before acting. Repeated taps during a loading delay can make it harder to determine what was accepted.
A favourable practice result does not predict later cards, verify withdrawals or make a betting progression profitable. Read optional promotion conditions separately from the game rules.
Choose a spending limit and end time before cash play, including both opening hands and possible extras. Our practice guide offers a learning routine and responsible gambling page lists support. Send factual corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the exact version and rule.
Blackjack Switch FAQs
Which cards can I exchange in Blackjack Switch?
Under the standard exchange, you may swap the second card dealt to each of the two opening hands once, at the specified stage. The first cards stay in place. It is not permission to exchange a dealer card, any later hit card or whichever player card you prefer.
Does $5 Switch mean a $5 total opening stake?
If the amount is $5 per hand, the two equal main wagers total $10 before extra stakes. Check how the actual interface labels its amount. Splits, doubles and optional side bets can increase the combined exposure.
Is an ace and king created by switching a natural?
Under the standard rule discussed here, it is a 21 rather than an original natural. Read the version's exact definition and settlement. The same point total does not guarantee the same natural payout or dealer-22 exception.
What happens when the Switch dealer finishes at 22?
Under the stated standard model, surviving ordinary hands push, returning their main stakes with no profit. An eligible original natural has its stated exception. A player hand that already busted is not restored, and the special rule is for exactly 22.
Can I use ordinary blackjack strategy after switching?
Use a matching Switch reference. Dealer-22 pushes and other conditions can change the later playing decisions. The switching decision itself also evaluates the pair of hands together and is a separate task from playing each resulting hand.
Must I switch whenever one resulting hand looks stronger?
No. Both hands change together, and the dealer upcard and rule set matter. The fixed examples demonstrate the mechanics only, not an optimal switching recommendation for every situation.
Can extra stakes exceed the two opening bets?
Yes. In the stated fictional example, two $5 opening hands total $10; doubling both makes $20. If one hand is instead split into a third and all three $5 hands are doubled, the total is $30 under those permissions. Side bets and further splits are excluded.
Do all five casino brands currently offer Blackjack Switch?
This guide does not verify that. Check the current regional lobby for the exact title, provider and rules. The comparison is an account starting point, not confirmation of every variant, public demonstration or provincial product selection.
