MATCH THE FIXED RULE PROFILE BEFORE USING A HAND DECISION

This blackjack hand decision calculator looks up an action for your cards, the dealer upcard and the available actions under one stated rule profile. It distinguishes hard hands, soft hands, pairs and eligible late surrender, including different fallbacks when doubling is unavailable.

It is a rule-based reference, not a prediction of the next card or a live assessment of a casino account. Use it only when the actual game matches the assumptions below.

Find a reference decision

Fixed profile: six decks; dealer stands on soft 17; qualifying natural pays 3:2; dealer checks for blackjack with ace or ten before player actions; doubling any initial two cards and after splitting; eligible late surrender; split aces receive one card, with no resplitting aces.

Enter the hand

Use A, 2–10, T, J, Q or K, separated by spaces or commas. Enter every card in the current hand.

Actions permitted on this hand

Double and split require two cards in this model. Late surrender is restricted to eligible original two-card hands. Context overrides an inapplicable checkbox.

Try a reference example:

Reference result

This tool does not verify the table rules, button availability, remaining funds or dealer’s hidden card. A correct reference decision can still lose.

Use the profile as part of the answer

The reference is for conventional six-deck S17 blackjack: S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17. It assumes the dealer’s ace-or-ten blackjack check occurs before player actions.

Do not apply it unchanged to H17, European no-peek settlement, Spanish 21, Blackjack Switch or another special format. Doubling, surrender and split conditions also need to match.

The Wizard of Odds multi-deck reference supplies ordered S17 hand instructions and distinguishes rule variations. The PlaySmart introduction explains hard, soft and pair categories.

Our basic-strategy guide explains how to read assumptions and fallbacks before using an action.

Enter the current cards and the visible dealer upcard

Use ranks separated by spaces or commas, such as 10 6, A 7 or 8 8. Lower-case letters are accepted. A dealer face card uses the ten-value option in the upcard selector.

Enter every card in the hand. A two-card hard 16 and a three-card hard 16 do not have identical initial-action eligibility, even though their totals match.

The tool calculates ace values and detects pairs from the entered cards. An original two-card ace plus ten-value 21 is identified as a natural pattern with no ordinary playing decision left in this model.

A point total by itself is not enough. Read card values or use the card-total calculator if the hard or soft label is unclear.

Set the context and available actions accurately

The checkboxes describe actions permitted on the current hand. They do not change the whole game into a different rule set or prove that a visible casino control will accept the action.

The model restricts doubling and splitting to two-card hands. It restricts late surrender to an eligible original two-card hand, after the assumed dealer check.

If a three-card hand is entered, the output does not enable an initial double merely because its checkbox remains ticked. Likewise, a hand after splitting does not gain late surrender from that checkbox.

Read the availability summary with the action. A disagreement can begin with an incorrect context or unavailable option rather than the hand total.

Keep surrender and pair instructions in the right order

Under the stated S17 profile, an eligible original ten–6 against dealer 10 uses late surrender. If that option is unavailable, its ordinary hard-total fallback is hit.

A pair of 8s against dealer 10 instead splits when splitting is permitted. Do not replace the pair instruction with a generic hard-16 result.

If splitting is marked unavailable, the tool evaluates the remaining supported instructions. Its action is a reference under those inputs, not a guarantee that the actual table offers that combination of options.

See surrender and splitting for timing, stakes and how the round continues.

Read whether an unavailable double means hit or stand

Ace–7 against dealer 3 uses double, otherwise stand in the stated profile. Removing Double available therefore produces stand, rather than a generic hit fallback.

Hard 11 made from 6–5 against dealer 6 uses double, otherwise hit. Removing the same option produces hit for this different situation.

The fallback is part of the instruction, not a separate guess. Read the reason and fallback together when comparing the result with another chart.

A full double also adds money. For an opening C$9 stake, adding C$9 commits C$18 to that hand. The calculator gives an action reference rather than an amount you should spend.

Distinguish regular split hands from restricted split aces

Use the regular split context for a supported hand after splitting other ranks. A further pair still requires permission to split again; use the availability checkbox to reflect a reached split limit.

The fixed split-ace profile gives each ace one additional card and permits no resplitting aces. Choose the restricted context for that situation; the result identifies that no further ordinary action is available.

A pair of aces after a split is also subject to this profile’s restriction. It does not become a new resplit recommendation. A split-hand ace plus ten-value 21 is not identified as an original-hand natural.

An original pair of aces with splitting unavailable is outside this tool’s fixed profile and produces an explanation instead of an invented fallback. Use a reference designed for the actual restriction.

Read all parts of the result

  1. Action: the reference decision or identification that no ordinary decision remains.
  2. Situation: the calculated hard or soft total and dealer upcard.
  3. Reason: the rule category and priority used.
  4. Fallback: the alternative or qualification where relevant.
  5. Availability: the options the model treated as applicable to the entered context.

A pair may be described numerically as hard 16 while its reason explains why the pair instruction takes priority. Read beyond the total.

Changing an input hides the previous result until Find decision is used again. This keeps an earlier action from appearing to belong to new cards.

Judge the decision separately from the next result

Basic strategy compares expected monetary outcomes under its assumptions. It does not predict the next card or guarantee that its chosen action wins the next hand.

A reference decision can lose, while an incorrect decision can happen to win. Record the cards, rules and reference answer separately from the settlement when reviewing practice.

The lookup does not use a recent win or loss streak as a prediction. It is also a standard total-based reference, not a card-counting or composition-dependent solver.

Read betting systems versus basic strategy and odds and house edge for those distinctions.

Check three decisions under the fixed profile

Ten–2 against dealer 4

Which hard-total action applies?

Stand in the stated S17 profile. A recent losing hand does not change that reference lookup.

Ace–7 against dealer 3

What if doubling is unavailable?

Stand. This example’s instruction is double, otherwise stand, rather than double, otherwise hit.

8–8 against dealer 10

What if splitting is permitted?

Split under the stated S17 pair instruction. Do not substitute the generic ten–6 surrender example.

Use practice play where available with matching rules. Compare a trainer’s context and permissions before concluding that two answers describe the same problem.

Use examples and resets as labelled

The three example buttons fill the cards and upcard, restore the original-hand context and mark the three action options available. They then calculate the example.

Reset hand restores original ten–6 against dealer 10 with those options available. Read the profile again before using the restored example for a different game.

For a different chart format, see the printable reference. Keep its assumptions and legend attached when comparing an answer.

Keep account and spending conditions separate

The tool does not read an operator account, check funds, validate a real button or determine promotional compliance. Doubles and splits can add stakes beyond the opening wager.

Read bonus terms separately for contribution, maximum-stake conditions and deadlines. A correct card decision does not establish that an offer permits a wager.

Keep a spending amount and finish time independent of a reference result. Our responsible gambling page provides support information. Contact editor Shayne Currie with a correction’s cards, upcard, context, available actions and complete game rules.

Blackjack hand-decision FAQs

Which blackjack rules does this calculator cover?

Its fixed profile is conventional six-deck S17 with a dealer ace-or-ten blackjack check before player actions, a 3:2 qualifying natural, initial two-card doubling and DAS, eligible late surrender, and one-card split aces with no resplitting aces. It does not cover every variant or rule set.

Does it tell me what action wins the next hand?

No. It gives a standard total-based reference action under the stated assumptions and inputs. The next outcome remains uncertain. It does not inspect a live shoe, dealer hidden card, account balance or real casino control.

Why does ace–7 against dealer 3 stand when doubling is unavailable?

The stated S17 instruction is double, otherwise stand. The fallback belongs to the specific situation. Hard 11 against dealer 6 instead uses double, otherwise hit. Do not replace every unavailable double with the same automatic action.

Can a three-card hand use late surrender just because the box is ticked?

No. The model restricts it to eligible original two-card hands after the assumed dealer check. It also restricts doubling and splitting to two-card hands. Context overrides an inapplicable checkbox, and the result lists the availability used.

Why is a pair of 8s not the same as another hard 16?

When splitting is permitted, the pair instruction takes priority in this S17 profile. Original ten–6 against dealer 10 can use eligible late surrender, while 8–8 splits. A shared numerical total does not establish the same applicable instruction.

What should I select for split aces?

Choose the restricted split-ace context. This profile allows one additional card and no resplitting aces, so it identifies no further ordinary playing decision. A split-hand ace plus ten-value card is not an original-hand natural in this model.

What if an original pair of aces cannot be split?

That restriction falls outside this fixed profile, so the tool shows an explanation rather than guessing an action. Use a reference matched to the actual permitted actions. An unsupported situation is not evidence that any arbitrary fallback is correct.

Why can a trainer or another chart give a different answer?

Compare the complete rules, dealer procedure, hand context, card count, action permissions and fallback legend. H17, no-peek settlement, special variants or composition-dependent exceptions can require another reference. Keep the actual settlement separate from checking decision accuracy.
