Martingale vs. Paroli

ONE SYSTEM RAISES AFTER LOSSES; THE OTHER RAISES AFTER WINS

Martingale and Paroli both change the next stake according to previous results, but their triggers point in opposite directions. Martingale increases after losses. Paroli increases after wins. Comparing them properly means recording every stake, reset and losing sequence, rather than looking only at successful cycles.

This guide uses explicit teaching rules and Canadian-dollar examples. It also compares every outcome in a small fair-game model, then explains why real blackjack needs additional rules for pushes, naturals, doubles and splits.

Define the version before comparing the results

Martingale model

Start with one unit. Double the next opening stake after an ordinary full-stake loss. Reset to one unit after an ordinary 1:1 win. In the push examples here, repeat the current step.

Paroli model

Start with one unit. After ordinary wins, use two and then four units. Reset after a loss or the third consecutive win. A push holds the current step and does not advance the win count.

These conventions make the arithmetic reproducible. They do not establish one universal way to handle every blackjack result. Read the betting-systems overview for other stake patterns.

A unit is a chosen stake amount, not a probability or a profit guarantee. At C$5 per unit, the one, two and four-unit stakes are C$5, C$10 and C$20.

Compare the same loss, loss, win sequence

Use a C$5 unit and three ordinary results: loss, loss, win. No pushes, natural bonuses, doubles, splits or side wagers appear in this first example.

Martingale: C$5, C$10, C$20

The two losses total C$15. The final ordinary win earns C$20 profit. Net result: plus C$5, with C$35 of stakes placed.

Paroli: C$5, C$5, C$5

Each loss resets to the base. The final win earns C$5 against C$10 already lost. Net result: minus C$5, with C$15 of stakes placed.

Martingale finishes ahead on this selected path, but it also commits more money and needs the final larger wager to win. The example is a conditional result, not evidence that the path will arrive before a limit is reached.

The next unplaced stake is not part of turnover. After this sequence, Martingale has reset to C$5; Paroli would request C$10 if another round were played.

A run of wins and a run of losses tell different stories

For three ordinary wins, Martingale stakes one unit each time and earns three units. Paroli stakes one, two and four, earning seven before resetting.

For three ordinary losses, Martingale loses one plus two plus four: seven units. Paroli resets each time and loses three units.

At C$5 per unit, those branches are plus C$15 versus plus C$35 for three wins, and minus C$35 versus minus C$15 for three losses.

Do not select only the favourable branch for each system. A useful comparison must retain both losing and winning paths, the same stopping horizon and the funding needed to place the wagers.

All eight paths in a three-round teaching model

Now use a fictional game with independent 50% win and 50% loss chances, ordinary 1:1 profit on every win, and no other outcomes. Both systems start with enough money to cover seven units, and the table permits a four-unit stake.

Play exactly three rounds and stop, even if a cycle is unfinished. Apply the reset rules above. W means win and L means loss. Each path has probability 1/8 in this model.

WWW +3 +7
WWL +1 −1
WLW +2 0
WLL −2 −2
LWW +2 +2
LWL 0 −2
LLW +1 −1
LLL −7 −3

The results in each column sum to zero. Since these paths are equally likely, each system’s expected net result is zero. Martingale finishes ahead on five paths; Paroli finishes ahead on two. The different success counts have not created an advantage.

This is an original finite-path calculation, not a simulation of casino blackjack. Actual blackjack has different probabilities, payouts and possible outcomes, so neither 5/8 nor 2/8 is a claimed real-game session success rate.

Martingale can request a stake that the plan cannot fund

With a C$2 base, five consecutive losing stakes are C$2, C$4, C$8, C$16 and C$32. They total C$62. The next requested stake is C$64.

If the spending amount was C$100, C$38 remains. A hypothetical C$40 table maximum also prevents the C$64 stake. The sequence stops before its advertised recovery calculation can be applied.

Betting C$38 instead does not preserve the same arithmetic. An ordinary C$38 win after C$62 lost still leaves a C$24 net loss. The smaller bet is not a hidden substitute for the unaffordable next step.

The Wizard of Odds discussion of betting systems explains Martingale’s recovery premise and finite-funds problem. Its examples from other games do not supply blackjack-specific streak probabilities.

Paroli can return earlier gains to the table

Using the stated one, two, four-unit cycle, two wins earn three units. Losing the four-unit third stake leaves minus one unit for the cycle.

At a C$5 unit, the first two wins earn C$15. The third wager risks C$20 and its loss leaves the cycle down C$5. It is not risk-free because the previous results were profitable.

A table maximum can obstruct Paroli too. If a hypothetical C$10 base is used at a table permitting at most C$30, the third requested C$40 stake is unavailable after two wins.

Reducing the stake, stopping early or continuing beyond three wins creates a different rule set. State that change when comparing records rather than crediting one version with another version’s successful result.

Pushes and natural payouts need their own conventions

In the push convention defined here, the stake returns without profit or loss and the current step repeats. Do not count that returned money as a winning cycle.

A natural paid at 3:2 has a different profit amount from the ordinary 1:1 wins used in the teaching paths. On a C$10 stake, 3:2 profit is C$15 rather than C$10.

Record that settlement accurately, then identify whether your written example treats it as one winning trigger or uses another rule. Changing the next stake according to the profit amount creates a different progression.

Use the payout guide for profit and returned stakes. Neither a system’s name nor a familiar button label establishes every game’s natural payout.

A blackjack double is different from doubling the next wager

Doubling down adds a stake to a hand already being played. Martingale’s doubling rule changes a later opening stake after a loss. They operate at different stages.

A C$10 hand doubled for another C$10 commits C$20. If it loses, the actual loss is C$20; calling it a “one-unit losing round” while ignoring the extra money produces an inaccurate record.

Split hands can also settle differently. Two C$10 hands, one ordinary win and one loss, return C$20 against C$20 committed: a level round before any other wagers.

Define how mixed results trigger the next step, and keep all amounts in the ledger. Use basic strategy matched to the game for the hand decision, rather than changing it to fit an outcome progression.

A reset rule does not improve the cards

OLG PlaySmart discusses increasing bets after wins or losses and the mistaken belief that a win becomes due. A recent result alone does not identify the next winning hand.

Blackjack cards drawn from a finite shoe can change its composition, so the fair independent model above must not be mistaken for a complete description of the game. An outcome progression is not a card-composition analysis.

If a wager retains a negative conditional expectation under a stated game model, changing its size based on past win and loss labels does not make that wager favourable. Larger commitments can change expected dollar losses and the distribution of results.

See odds and house edge for the difference between a single outcome, an average expectation and the amount used as the stake base.

Check the arithmetic before believing a recovery claim

C$2 losing progression

What follows five losses from C$2 through C$32?

C$62 has been lost and the next requested stake is C$64. With C$38 left from a C$100 spending amount, it cannot be placed.

Paroli: two wins, then loss

What is the net at one, two and four units?

One plus two minus four equals minus one unit. At a C$5 base, the cycle loses C$5 despite its first two wins.

More winning paths

Does five profitable paths out of eight prove an edge?

No. In the stated fair three-round model, Martingale’s eight net results sum to zero. Its larger losing path offsets the favourable path count.

These checks use defined examples. A practice session can help you read controls and settlements, but a short successful run does not validate a profitable system.

Compare complete records under the same stopping rules

Record the base unit, resets, actual stakes, extra hand stakes, net returns, maximum commitment and why play stopped. Keep any unfinished cycle in the result.

Compare the same horizon rather than letting one system continue until a win while stopping the other at a fixed round count. Include table and funding limits explicitly.

Read bonus terms for maximum promotional stakes and eligible wagers. Game acceptance alone does not settle whether an offer permits a wager.

Keep a spending amount and finish time independent of either sequence. Do not add funds to finish a recovery cycle. Our responsible gambling page provides support information; send factual corrections to editor Shayne Currie with the precise assumptions and calculation.

Martingale versus Paroli FAQs

What is the main difference between Martingale and Paroli?

Their triggers differ. The simplified Martingale doubles the next stake after an ordinary loss and resets after an ordinary win. The Paroli example raises after wins through one, two and four units, resetting after a loss or the third win. Neither trigger identifies an upcoming winning hand.

Does Martingale always recover earlier losses?

Only a conditional calculation shows recovery after a sufficiently large ordinary even-money win. The required wager may exceed remaining funds, a spending limit or the table maximum before that win occurs. Changing the stake to an affordable smaller amount changes the recovery arithmetic.

Is Paroli risk-free because it raises after wins?

No. Earlier gains are money that can be lost on later wagers. In the one, two, four-unit example, two ordinary wins followed by a loss produce minus one unit. At a C$5 base, C$15 of earlier profit is followed by a C$20 loss.

Which system wins more often in the three-round comparison?

In the expressly fictional independent 50/50 model, Martingale finishes ahead on five of eight equally likely paths and Paroli on two. Both columns average zero. Those fractions are not blackjack success rates, and a count of profitable paths does not account for the size of losses.

What does the example do after a push?

The stated convention repeats the current stake and does not advance the Paroli win count. The returned stake is not profit. Other conventions can be defined, but they create different models and should be stated before their results are compared.

Is doubling down the same as Martingale doubling?

No. Doubling down adds money to the current hand under its game rules. Martingale changes a later opening wager after a specified loss. Record the actual extra stake and resulting profit or loss rather than treating every blackjack round as a simple one-unit outcome.

Can a table maximum obstruct Paroli as well?

Yes. With a hypothetical C$10 base and C$30 table maximum, the one, two, four-unit sequence requests C$40 at its third step. That wager is unavailable. Stopping or reducing it changes the example, so retain the changed rule in any comparison.

How should I compare real session records?

Use the same horizon and explicit rules for resets, pushes, naturals and mixed split results. Include actual stakes, extra stakes, net settlement, maximum commitments and every stopped cycle. Do not omit a loss because the next required wager could not be funded or permitted.
